Nokia N8 shoots the cover for a photographic magazine
December 17th, 2010
byKyle
The December issue of the South African PiX photographic
magazine is a special one. You can’t see why just by looking at it, but
when you learn how it was shot you’ll know it deserves a big credit.

Nokia N8, the highly acclaimed cameraphone, took the cover photo. In fact, the phone did all the shots from which the cover shot was picked.

Watch the official iPad 2 overview right here [VIDEO]
March 2nd, 2011
byVince
Apple iPad 2 has just been announced and Apple rushed out
to post a video overview of the device. The iPad 2 features the same
9.7-inch 1024x768px capacitive touchscreen display as the original iPad,
but it’s more powerful with the all-new dual-core A5 chip, which
includes up to 9x faster graphics chip.

I can continue to go about the iPad 2′s re-design and features, but Apple has tried pretty hard to make this 6-minute-plus video, so here it is. (more…)

A few quick impressions on the Samsung Exhibit 4G
June 27th, 2011
byStefan
With all the buzz around the Galaxy line of handsets, many
people forget that it was cool mid-range handsets with good
bang-for-the buck that took Samsung to the top. We managed to spend a
bit of quality time with the just released Samsung Exhibit 4G for T-Mobile in the United States, and here come some fresh impressions for you.

The Exhibit 4G is by no means a flagship device, but it was never meant to be one. Its $79.99 price tag puts it in the middle of the T-Mobile Android range and it got most of the hardware of the last year’s Galaxy S. (more…)

HTC Thunderbolt 4G overclocked to 1.8GHz, eats benchmarks for breakfast
March 30th, 2011
byChip
Now that was fast. The first kernel modification for the
HTC Thunderbolt 4G overclocking its Snapdragon chipset appeared only a
few hours after the Taiwanese company officially released its source
code. The frequency was pushed to the impressively sounding 1.8 GHz,
which has resulted in some pretty impressive benchmark results.

The 1.8GHz HTC Thunderbolt 4G scored over 3000 in Quadrant, which is immense for a single-core handset. (more…)

Android, the alphabet and desserts: turning Flan into Froyo
January 18th, 2010
byPeter
Mobile phones
Whoever comes up with the codenames for the Android
releases sure has a sweet tooth. We’ve had Cupcakes, Donuts and Eclairs
so far. As you can see, the Android developers like the alphabet as well
as sweets. The sequel was rumored to be called Flan, but now there’s
talk of it being called Froyo.

New firmware update for Nokia N900, more apps coming soon
February 17th, 2010
byKyle
There is a new firmware update for the Maemo 5 running
Nokia N900. It’s 16MB only, so don’t expect major changes or loads of
new software. The only thing to note at this stage are a lot of new
regions supported.

Visa unveiling the most comprehensive mobile payment scheme to date
May 15th, 2011
byAlex
Credit card giant Visa plans to roll out the most
extensive digital wallet system ever attempted by a credit card
processor, bank or carrier that will focus on NFC in its implementation
across Canada and the US. To kick the service off they need to see a
greater adoption of NFC readers from merchants, those willing to pay
transaction fees back to Visa or its partner banks whilst using the
service.

Visa already uses NFC readers (about 150,000 of them) in conjunction with its PayWave service but this new scheme sees Visa make far greater use of its existing reach. There are currently over 1.8 billion Visa cards in use worldwide, usable at over 30 million stores, with more than 50% of credit card transactions in the US being handled by Visa followed by MasterCard, American Express and Discover as the next largest companies. The full Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK is now officially out
February 23rd, 2011
byJohnny
The full SDK for Android 3.0 is available to developers
and now they can start making apps for the tablet-oriented OS. The new
APIs are ready and integrated and the SDK Tools are now at version r13.

This is great news for future owners of the slew of Honeycomb tablets released this year at the MWC, running Honeycomb. It means that pretty soon the new Android version will be getting specific apps in the Android Market.

Foosball fever by Nokia, now that’s a cool video ad
May 31st, 2010
byChavis
It’s rare that I come upon a seriously impressive video ad
such as this one. I won’t waste your time trying to recap, I’ll just
say those are some wicked foosball tricks.
Oh, I also think I saw a Nokia N8 parading around at some point, but I’m not really sure. I’m too busy learning the new moves.

How LARGE is the Nokia N8 large image sensor? Updated!
April 27th, 2010
byChip
Earlier today Nokia announced their latest multimedia
flagship, the N8 and said that it packs a large sensor that rivals those
found in compact digital cameras. But they never actually quoted the
exact sensor size and since compact cameras sensors go from 1/3″ through
1/2.5″ to 1/1.6″ in diagonal (from smallest to largest) I felt the need
to do the math and find out where exactly the Nokia N8 ranks.

After all 1/2.5″ sensors have been around the mobile industry for a while now – Nokia N95 had a sensor about that size some 3 years ago. Yet, it turns out that Nokia did have something to boast about with the Nokia N8. (more…)

Huawei shows an amazing concept for a phone, called Leaf
April 12th, 2011
byStefan
I was under the impression that Huawei was focusing its mobile efforts mainly on Android phones until I ran into this creation of theirs, called Leaf.

In an era, where feature phones are on their way out of the major markets, the Chinese telecommunications giant commissioned the Swedish design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune to design a simple and attractive device, whose main goal is to bring mobile telephony back to basics. (more…)

HTC HD2 battery life test ready, not bad at all
November 24th, 2009
byRolin
Let’s face it, battery tests are long and tedious. They’re
also quite hard to time correctly as mobile phone usage varies quite a
lot. But that’s not the reason why over at GSMArena we rarely have
something specific to say about battery life in our otherwise detailed
reviews.
Enter time constraints. The thing is, we rarely have the test units at our disposal long enough to properly test the battery life without interfering with our reviewing routine. In those cases the reviewers try to evaluate the battery performance based on their subjective feeling and experience rather than anything else. Not that can’t be correct. And we don’t pretend it is.
With the HTC HD2 we are using a retail version (unlike all the many pre-production units that come our way) and we had the opportunity to take our time and test the battery life properly.
